Escape to Maryhill Museum of Art

Sculptures and other artwork can be found inside and out at Maryhill Museum of Art.

The George E. Muehleck Jr. Gallery of International Chess Sets has 90 sets and numerous gaming pieces, as well as a global historical overview of chess, stories of chess and chess-related works of art, on display. The sets and pieces are from India, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia.

Visitors to the museum can challenge one another to a friendly game using a large-scale chess set in the adjacent M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center.

The museum, located in a mansion on 5,300 acres, has more than 80 works by Auguste Rodin, as well as European and American paintings and objects d’art from the palaces of the Queen of Romania. The Th??tre de la Mode features small-scale mannequins wearing designer fashions of post-World War II France.

The founder of the museum, Sam Hill, collected baskets created by indigenous people of North America. The American Indian collection at Maryhill includes prehistoric through contemporary works of art.

The William and Catherine Dickson Sculpture Park has more than a dozen large-scale works by Northwest artists. The Maryhill Overlook is a sculpture by Portland architect Brad Cloepfil. Interpretive panels about Lewis and Clark are nearby.

The museum, which has a cafe and gift shop, is surrounded by several expansive lawns, shade trees and picnic areas.

The Maryhill Museum of Art is located at 35 Maryhill Museum Drive, Goldendale, Washington.

It is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 15 through Nov. 15.
